UAE Newsroom Leadership

Bloomberg

  • Period: 2017 - 2024
  • Role: Executive Producer, Middle East & Africa
  • Output: Live television, breaking news, long-form interviews, sponsored content

In 2017, Bloomberg relocated me from London to Dubai to take up the role of Executive Producer for the Middle East and Africa.

The position carried regional responsibility for live television output, breaking news coverage and editorial leadership across one of the most complex and fast-moving news regions in the world.

I led the team responsible for producing Daybreak: Middle East - Bloomberg’s flagship regional morning programme - as well as overseeing coverage of major political, economic and business events across the Middle East and Africa.

My Role

As Executive Producer, I was responsible for the day-to-day editorial direction of Bloomberg’s Middle East and Africa television output - and I was a key decision-maker on strategy and longer-term planning.

My responsibilities included:

  • Leading and expanding the regional editorial and production team
  • Doubling the programme’s duration from one hour to two hours per day
  • Guiding anchors and correspondents conducting interviews with senior political and business leaders
  • Overseeing the delivery of high-profile sponsored content for organisations including Dubai Tourism, Standard Chartered and Zurich Insurance

Outcome

Over six years in the role, Bloomberg established a strong and credible television presence in the Middle East and Africa.

The daily show was greatly strengthened editorially and technically, and performed so well that it was doubled from one hour a day to two.

The experience cemented my reputation as a calm, trusted editorial leader capable of managing live broadcast teams, high-profile talent and complex commercial and political environments.

The National

After leaving Bloomberg, I joined The National as Head of Multimedia, tasked with transforming the organisation’s video and audio output for a rapidly evolving digital audience.

My Role

My responsibilities included:

  • Managing a team of approximately 20 video journalists, podcast producers and editors across the world
  • Redefining editorial video strategy around human-led storytelling
  • Shifting formats toward reporters talking to camera and interview-driven narratives
  • Overseeing branded and sponsored video and podcast production
  • Integrating multimedia more deeply into daily newsroom decision-making
  • Launching video products with renowned television anchors Manus Cranny and Hadley Gamble

Outcome

In less than two years:

  • Monthly video views increased from ~20 million to an average of nearly 100 million
  • YouTube subscribers grew from 600,000 to 700,000
  • Multiple award nominations and wins were achieved for video and podcast products
  • The organisation met key commercial targets through sponsored multimedia content

Summary

Across nearly a decade in the UAE, spanning global broadcast and national news publishing, I have led large editorial teams - from live television to digital-first multimedia content.

This work demonstrates how clear editorial leadership, modern storytelling and disciplined execution can deliver scale, credibility and measurable growth in complex newsroom environments.
